Second Lieutenant (Sep.) Ed Metcalf served in the Army Air Corps from 1942 - 1946 during World War II. He is a former B-24 Liberator bombardier and navigator who flew 29 missions over Nazi-occupied Europe. Metcalf was assigned to the 446th Bombardment Group, an Eighth Air Force B-24 Liberator unit out of England. Assigned to Royal Air Force Station Bungay in 1943, the group led the Eighth Air Force and the 2d Bombardment Division on the first heavy bomber mission of D-Day. When asked about his feelings towards Nazis he said, "Boy, they were evil, let's face it. I have no regrets."
Metcalf continues to give back to the Air Force community, volunteering at the Hill Aerospace Museum at Hill Air Force Base, Utah, twice weekly as a tour guide. He recalls a German lady who visited the museum and accused him of being a murderer for flying missions over Germany during the war. "She forgot about the concentration camps," Metcalf said. "We had a job to do, and we did it." He also paints and constructs World War II era aircraft models in his free time, including the B-24 he was assigned to during the conflict, nicknamed, "Mama's Little Angel."
