Walter Quering

Staff Sgt. (Sep.) Walter Quering was drafted into World War II and entered basic training in June 1943.  He became a waist gunner on a B-17 Flying Fortress and was assigned to the 8th Air Force’s 487th Bomb Group, 838th  Bombardment Squadron, which flew out of Lavenham, England and was commanded by Brig. Gen. Jimmy Doolittle. Quering flew 34 missions during the war and the B-17 he was on was one of 56 bombers that led the 8th Air Force during the Battle of the Bulge. In March 1945, he was wounded by German anti-aircraft fire which ended his combat role in World War II.  Quering was awarded the Legion of Honor medal from France for his part in that country’s liberation.  After the war, Quering moved to Colorado and has lived there ever since. Military service is in his blood and that tradition continues today. His father fought in World War I, and his son-in-law in Vietnam and his grandson in Iraq and Afghanistan.
