Chief Master Sergeant (Ret.) Larry Smith enlisted in the U.S. Air Force in 1977. His assignments include Rhien-Main Air Base, Germany; Hickam Air Force Base, Hawaii; Pope AFB, N.C.; and Langley AFB, Va.
Smith is proud of the years he served in the Air Force: “The day I sewed on chief is something I never dreamed of – one percent. It goes to show that if you work hard, supervisors and commanding officers who write your enlisted promotion reports (EPRs) will recognize it and the rewards will come…and that means a lot.”
Smith retired from active duty in 2006 and is currently an airfield manager at the 437th Operations Support Squadron at Joint Base Charleston, S.C. He says the most fulfilling personal event in his civil service career is “being able to continue to mentor some of the finest young active duty men and women in the Air Force, and pass on to them my knowledge and leave the place a little ‘better than you found it.’ People first!”
