Born and raised in Michigan, Master Sgt. (Ret.) Alex Slocum signed up for the U.S. Air Force in December of 1978 and entered basic training in July 1979.
He completed Law Enforcement Specialist Technical School at Lackland AFB, Texas and had assignments at all over the world to include Kwang Ju AB, Korea, Clark AB, Philippines and RAF Mildenhall, England. Slocum, completed three deployments to Saudi Arabia throughout the 1990s and then retired Feb. 1, 2000.
According to Slocum, he had two terrifying, yet memorable moments in the midst of two terrorist attacks on Air Force personnel. The first was the bombing outside of the United States Air Forces in Euope Headquarters at Ramstein AB, Germany while he was with the U.S. Forces Police Station at Vogelweh, Germany in August 1981. The second was the simultaneous murders of two Air Force members outside the gates of Clark AB, Philippines in October 1987.
After his retirement from active duty he was employed with the Kansas City Royals and Techseco Incorporated until securing civilian employment at Whiteman AFB, Mo. in July 2005. He is currently employed with the 509th Bomb Wing as a security specialist in the Information Protection Office.
Slocum is an award winning historian with The American Legion and served for two years as commander of Matthews-Crawford Post 131. He was recently elected to the position of commander for Department of Missouri’s Sixth District in June 2014. Slocum continues his service as a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and Disabled American Veterans and is also a board member of the Veterans Assistance League at the Missouri State Veterans Home-Warrensburg.
