Leslie Jones

Leslie Jones joined the Air Force in November 1983, at the age of 26. Having just been laid off from his job at a railroad company, Jones decided to follow in his father’s footsteps, who had been serving in the Army Air Corps at the time. Initially thinking of serving for just four years, Jones ended up with an age waiver to stay in longer and retired as a chief master sergeant after 30 years of service, making him the oldest enlisted airman in the civil engineer career field. During his Air Force career, Jones was stationed at multiple bases in Germany and Belgium, with one stateside assignment at McChord Air Force Base, Washington. Jones also deployed in support of Desert Storm and Operation Provide Comfort in Turkey and Iraq, then later to Iraq and Afghanistan in support of the Global War on Terrorism. Jones fondly remembers the lifelong friends and memories he made alone the way. One example of this occurred when he deployed to Baghdad with a good hometown friend and Navy captain. Jones’ last duty station was Spangdahlem Air Base, Germany, where he met his future wife, marrying her the day after his retirement. He now works at lodging on Spangdahlem AB, using his Post-9/11 GI Bill to continue his education.
